a place providing opportunity for experimentation, observation, or practice in a field of study

Nuffield Laboratory is our creative development programme for theatre-makers and companies, based here at the Nuffield Theatre in Southampton. It is a space where we collaborate with artists at all stages in their careers to experiment with new ideas; a creative hub for exploration and discovery. All the work for our stage is developed through our Laboratory, right alongside our unique opportunities for theatre-makers from Hampshire and across the UK to explore new creative projects and ideas or to hone and develop theatrical craft.

You can find out more about the ways to get involved with the Laboratory using the links on the left of this page.

If you are a professional or aspiring artist who is interested in building a relationship with Nuffield, please contact Hannah Bevan on, or read our FAQs for more information. If you have questions about membership or about any of the upcoming Laboratory events, please contact Chris Duncan on We will endeavour to respond to your enquiry as quickly as possible.
