A FREE family event in Mayflower Park
Voyage into the Blue
Dates and times
10 April , 5pm – 8.30pm
A FREE family event takes place on Saturday 10 April from 5pm in Mayflower Park, Southampton, celebrating the launch of P&O Cruises latest superliner, Azura.
The Nuffield Theatre and Southampton City Council have teamed up with P&O Cruises to bring you VOYAGE INTO THE BLUE. This unique chance to watch Azura’s sparkling naming ceremony live on a big screen will be combined with acrobatic theatre performance, dance performances, music, a funfair and a spectacular firework finale, in a fun event for all the family.
Ceremoniously blessing a ship before it sails out to sea is a time-honoured tradition and ballerina Darcey Bussell will lead the celebrations by becoming godmother to Azura. The ceremony will be shown live on a big screen from Mayflower Park, and will end with a stunning firework finale.
The Nuffield Theatre and the team behind last year’s spectacular Midsummer Dreams in Guildhall Square are delighted to bring French acrobatic theatre geniuses Les 3 Points de Suspension to Southampton, with their incredible show JOURNEY ON THE EDGE OF THE END OF THE WORLD. This lunatic, pythonesque story packed full of humour, danger, singing and levitation, features jaw-dropping human catapults and bouncing stilts, and has had rave reviews all over Europe – don’t miss your chance to see it!
JOURNEY ON THE EDGE OF THE END OF THE WORLD is part of Art at the Heart; a programme of inspirational creative projects for Southampton’s emerging cultural quarter, led by Southampton City Council with Art Asia, City Eye, John Hansard Gallery and The Nuffield Theatre, supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and the European Regional Development Fund through Interreg.
Events begin at 5pm with Journey on the Edge of the End of the World beginning at 6.30pm and the naming of Azura at 8pm, and firework finale at 8.20pm. Plus, there will be a chance to win a weekend break with P&O Cruises!
