By Gilbert & Sullivan
Dates
29 June – 3 July
Southampton Operatic Society returns to The Nuffield and to G & S - their area of acknowledged excellence. UTOPIA was the penultimate show written by Gilbert and Sullivan and is a rare gem. Gilbert’s satire was aimed at ‘the Establishment’ and the show is set on an idyllic far-away island that yearns to copy all of Britain’s ways to gain her greatness. The logical conclusion is for Utopia to incorporate herself as a limited company!
Sullivan’s music shines through the piece and includes such well-loved numbers as Of Native Maids the Cream, A Tenor All Singers Above and the unaccompanied Eagle High. A hugely enjoyable evening is promised with this updated production from an award-winning Society, with laughs and excellent singing guaranteed.
